Mary Kessens
Adventurer, trainer, mentor, volunteer, visionary, entrepreneur, internationalist, leader, person of faith and a true humanitarian are words used by Mary Kessens' club leaders to describe her.
Mary has been a member of the Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton, WI since 1991, serving as club president, Board member and active participant in fundraising and service projects. As chair of the Books for Nigeria Committee, her club shipped 16,000 books to Nigeria, a project they continue today. Mary has served as Group Study Exchange team leader to District 9110, Nigeria in 2002. Since that time she has given presentations which lead to seeded well drilling, micro-lending and public toilet and literacy projects between the US and Nigeria. She has also served on the District Foundation and Grants Committees, World Community Service and GSE committees and has been the District Trainer. Mary is a multiple Paul Harris fellow. Over the years, Mary has contributed her leadership skills to the Boards of Advanced Employment and United Cerebral Palsy, agencies dedicated to supporting people with disabilities. She has served in Board and leadership positions in her church and numerous professional organizations. She was named 2003 Leader of the Year by Leadership Greater Madison Alumni and 2004 Rotarian of the Year by her club. Mary has a background in management consulting and is currently an officer and manager in three family businesses as well as serving as business manager for a non-profit providing service to people with disabilities.
Mary has enjoyed many years of marital bliss with husband Tom Mickelson, who has enjoyed with Mary, the company of GSE teams, youth exchange and the many Rotary, local and international friends. Mary and Tom have two adult children, Matt Mickelson living in Oxford, NC and Carl Mickelson living in Coos Bay, OR.
